If you have a pet, you need to take extra steps when cleaning your upholstery. This includes getting a professional upholstery cleaning.

Upholstery Cleaning Guide for Pet Owners

Let’s face it: pets can be messy! Between pet fur and accidents, sometimes your upholstered furniture can take a beating. As a pet owner, you have added steps in caring for your upholstery. It is essential to know how this furniture should regularly be cleaned and what you should do if there is a stain. In addition, it is important to occasionally have an upholstery cleaning by a professional company such as Extreme Carpet Care & Restoration. Did you know that, according to the National Pet Owners Survey, 67% of US households own a pet? That’s a lot of people who need to know how to clean their upholstery! Read on to learn how pet owners should clean their upholstered furniture.

Day-to-Day Cleaning

As far as day-to-day cleaning goes, vacuuming is the most important thing. This is especially vital if your cat or dog likes to jump on the furniture. A daily or weekly vacuuming using the upholstery attachment will clean up any fur left behind and will keep your upholstery nice and fresh. Without a frequent vacuum, no one will want to sit on the upholstery because they will get fur all over their clothes.

Cleaning After an Accident

Sometimes pets have accidents, and it’s usually in the most unfortunate spots. If your cat or dog has an accident or gets sick on upholstered furniture, it is important to clean up as soon as possible to avoid permanent stains. Check the tag on the piece of furniture to see what kind of solvents can be used. Some pieces can only be vacuumed, while others allow certain types of cleaners. A pet stain and odor remover solvent is the best way to remove pet-related stains. These can be bought at your local pet store. Be sure to test out the cleaner on a hidden spot first to make sure it doesn’t take the color out or ruin the upholstery. If you don’t have a pet cleaning solution in the house, use dish soap and warm water to remove the stain.

Carpet Cleaning Tips for Tough Stains

Soft, clean carpets always feel so inviting. However, at times, you can get tough stains on your carpet that you don’t know how to clean. You don’t want to replace the carpet, which is an expensive proposition. Knowing effective ways of removing carpet stains, especially the tough ones, is a more economical way of dealing with this everyday problem.

Basic Stain Removal

The trick to removing any carpet stain is to act fast. As soon as you spill food items or anything else, be sure to scrape it off right away. For basic stains, you can use a damp cloth or paper towel to remove it. Use plain fabric or paper towels without any colors and press gently into the stain. You may have to try a few times before you get the stain out, so patience is essential.

Removing Wine Stains

Imagine spilling red wine on your carpet. No matter how careful we are, it happens. When this happens, you need to first blot the spill with a damp cloth or paper towel. Try removing as much wine from the carpet as possible. Then you can apply a carpet stain remover. Choose a carpet stain remover that doesn’t affect the color of your carpet. Let the stain remover stand for at least 5 minutes, then blot again with another damp paper towel or cloth. Repeat the process as many times as necessary. Stubborn stains may take a while to go away.

Removing Pet Stains

Pets can be quite cute but may cause headaches as far as your carpets are concerned. Stain and odor are both a problem if your pet potties on your carpet. When this happens, you can blot with a color-safe material to absorb as much moisture as possible. Then you can use a stain remover meant for pet messes. Repeat the process until the stain and smell are both removed.

At Extreme Carpet Care & Restoration, we understand that carpets add warmth, comfort, and style to your home. However, the demands of life can be tough on even the highest-quality carpet. While cleaning your carpets, you shouldn’t have to worry about the chemicals left behind. We love our pets, but sometimes the “presents” they leave us are not so lovable. From dirty paws, to accidents on the floors, pets can wreak havoc on carpeting. We can help!

Urine in carpeting is a severe problem that often requires major restoration work, not just simple cleaning and treating. Because dogs and cats don’t sweat, their urine contains alkaline salts which absorb moisture out of the air. As the urine dries, the liquid evaporates and these crystals become even more concentrated and pungent, becoming a feeding ground for bacteria.

Urine deposited on carpet does not stay on the surface; it penetrates the fibers and contaminates both the backing of the carpet and the flooring material below the carpet. Often, without your knowing, pets will urinate continually in the same general location. Urine odors can permeate from the floor, be it cement or wood, from the tack strip, and even from the framework of the house behind the walls. Simple cleaning will not remove this odor. We offer urine and odor removal services designed for any situation.

1. Inspection. The source and severity of the odor are determined.

2. Application of enzyme. The carpet will be treated with our special enzyme treatment to neutralize urine and aid in removal of the stain and odor. Heavily stained areas may be more heavily saturated and extracted to reach the padding.

3. Deep steam extraction. The carpet will be rinsed and extracted with our exclusive hot water extraction method to remove the bulk of the urine crystals and the pre-treatment agent.

If the first three steps do not remove the staining or odor, or the problem is severe, more extreme measures may be taken. This level of service is labor intensive and would include cleaning and sealing the sub floor, and replacing the carpeting and padding. Our office can assist you with more information and pricing.4. Inspect padding and subfloor. The carpet is pulled back in the suspected areas to reveal the extent of the damage.5. Carpet and pad removal. Carpet padding pad will be removed and discarded. In some cases, the carpeting may be salvageable.6. Seal subfloor. Over time, urine can wick up from the sub floor, damaging the new carpet and pad. An odor blocking shellac is applied to affected areas which may include the sub-floor, tack strips, carpet backing, baseboards, and walls.7. Replace padding and carpet.
